Interview With Roberto Celi
Have you always been interested in music? What is your story and how did you start making music?
Hello, yes, I have always been interested in music since I was a child, I used to beat the rhythm on everything that came within my reach… empty boxes, pots, and pans and so on… then I developed my interest as I grew up and I studied music at the conservatory and with private teachers in parallel with traditional schools…
I first started with the drums and the bass and then moved on to my main instrument, which is the vibraphone… My musical reference points are Gary Burton and Milt Jackson also for pop rock music David Bowie…
What are you working on now? Any future releases we can look forward to?
I now have a new musical project called “Vibrando” that I am releasing by playing my old pieces remastered, producing new ones and covers.
To be precise, I will produce some international cover tunes, and for the Italian market, I will release a CD of 60s 70s covers.
The vibraphone is my primary instrument, and its sound is often present in the shape foreground of my music.
What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry?
To make my music and my message known to as many people as possible and receive a positive or negative response to it
It’s all about fueling and energizing my musical expression…
What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?
Continuing to keep that attitude alive all these years, even in negative or sterile moments for inspiration…
How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it or what’s Your typical songwriting process?
You know, considering that I compose instrumental music without words, I find the inspiration from a state of mind, a landscape, a person, something I have experienced…
All this translates into an initial melody that I then develop on the vibraphone to subsequently harmonize it and find the right rhythm…
Sometimes, however, it all stems from an improvised bass line on which I launch extended vibrating chords and percussion…
I usually layer my arrangements on four or five levels with main melody, harmonic chords, accented sound effects, bass and drums.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
It has provided a strong impact by giving an enormous possibility of diffusion and speed of feedback…
Music is a universal language and conveyed globally makes distances and cultures closer.
The Internet, therefore, if properly used, is absolutely performant….
List some famous musicians currently on your playlist?
Ah.. you know…David Bowie, Keane, Bruno Mars, Alicia Keys, U2…about italian…Le Orme,
What Did You Do Before You Started Making Music?
I have a degree in sociology of work and I was in charge of payroll
Would you have any advice for young people wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Believing in what you do and mastering the technique that allows you to express in music what you have to say…
Above all having clear ideas and understanding your aptitude early on.
If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be?
Ahh… that’s a tricky question… if we talk about the general panorama, some things have changed for the better in the last few years, also thanks to the Internet, as we said before… Greater visibility is now possible for many emerging artists… In Italy, we need more grassroots spaces for young musicians…
Remaining independent is still as difficult now as it was in past times…
How do you feel about originality?
It is a relative question in the sense that originality for me means being oneself and expressing it in the way that best suits one’s feelings…equally true is that one can be inspired or influenced by some charismatic entity and therefore appear a predictable figure…
Is there anything else we should know about you? or Something that you would like to add?
I would like to say that I have always tried to keep my passion for music alive…today I compose and play the vibraphone and I record my own music, supplementing it with bass, drums and sometimes the accordion…
Listen to my tunes and if you like something don’t hesitate to let me know…
Thanks a lot, and best regards.
