Brief info

CANNING is a rock band from Chicago in the United States. The band is currently composed of Rick Canning, Tom Miller and Fritz Armstrong. Drums, bass and guitar are the elementary building blocks employed by the band to articulate a distinctive voice as a whole. From simple aspirations in the beginning, to the ability to fortify reality, there is a depth and reflection found within chosen notes as time progresses forward. Between the intervals, an understanding of space develops that plays into an emotional grasp that can only be described as life. The following recognized moments touch upon the origins wherein unique individual musical foundations began, thus flowing through to the recent now and eventually reaching into the beyond...

THEIR PASTS

Fritz Armstrong - Bass and vocals
When he was five, Fritz’s father set up an old worn RadioShack stereo in the work area of the garage. In the living room, there was another stereo device which was not to be touched by any prying, curious hands. Therefore, the garage naturally became the room in which Fritz would spend most of his time. After some Sesame Street and Disney records, the goods finally arrived - ‘The Magical Mystery Tour’. Forging deep within his ears was a music that was simply beyond compare...musical notes having this uniquely special sound to them. To this day, as with every recording he has listened to since this day, he approaches listening openly for the possibility of a new sound or sense of feeling. Having learned vastly from that mind opening, original experience, he claims...’That's gold for my ears.’

Tom Miller - Drums
Once peaking the top-forty countdown, ‘I Love Rock ‘n Roll’ was a number one radio hit for
what seemed like years to Tom. Every Sunday afternoon, his family would wake up and listen to the radio countdown in its entirety, but when that song came on he felt like Ralphie opening up the much-anticipated package containing the decoder ring. Undoubtedly saying, he was now hooked on the anticipation and raw thunder of a riff and a rock beat! Banging on a friend's drum set at an early age, Tom had achieved some success at playing the straightforward and purely unembellished drum backbeat that drew him inward at the time. He just couldn't get enough, thus knowing...’I had to play music forever.’

Ricky Canning - Guitarist and Vocals
During childhood, Ricky recalls the FM radio in the family’s living room where he found himself
sitting many, many times in an armchair, next to the magical device anxiously waiting for that particular song to emit from behind the radio’s tannish brown mesh cover... ‘Standing in the rain, with his head hung low...Couldn’t get a ticket, it was a sold-out show...’ emulated from behind the radio’s meshed faceplate. ‘I fell in love with it,’ Ricky admits. The syncopated guitar, those drums pounding their rhythms, along with that blistering vocal of determination, Ricky would be propelled into the groove... ‘He heard one guitar’...and was hooked for life.

THE PRESENT

CANNING is excited to bring the music to the people and around the world! In the end, They are simply a live band where on stage the heights of excitement, experimentation and tomfoolery can be experienced by both the audience and for the three core members...Fritz, Tom & Ricky. As for the curious listeners taking a deeper dive, a true connection can be made by experiencing the depths and devotion found within the assault, along with the gentle caresses of a live show. CANNING deems to explore their music and portray a song in its rightful place, at least for that given moment. Throughout the years, having noticed that many times they do not play the song, moreover, with the elasticity of time...the song plays the band...

THE FUTURE

Not setting any absurdly extensive goals or resolutions, but to simply continue as a whole as
CANNING rolls into the ever-present days and years ahead. Reaching out and affecting those around with positivity rather than negativity, including themselves. Experiencing the wonders of a moment and the people around for the inspiration that they bring. Hopefully also, stopping to appreciate, or at least slowing down enough to realize the beauty that can found within and all around...

Interview With Canning

Have you always been interested in music? What is your story and how did you start making music?

Tom, Fritz and Ricky have always gravitated towards music since early childhood. To dive into the details, please visit our ‘About’ page on the CanningMusic website where the origination stories unfold. As for the current story, Canning simply engages in the emotional story that’s written between the lines that’s been lived through and thru by each member. Tom and Ricky began playing together in high school then Fritz entered the picture shortly after…the beginning of a very long and continuing adventure…

What are you working on now? Any future releases we can look forward to?

Canning is currently working on more singles…FTH is ready for mix, couple others are ready for vox and we are hitting record during rehearsals lately to possibly capture basic tracks for a few songs that are dear to our hearts. We’ll probably release FTH mid winter…

What Is Your Ultimate Goal In The Music Industry?

Music is life so I wouldn’t say there’s an ultimate goal in the life industry but we have achieved knowing that the music we write and record is our freedom…

What Has Been The Biggest Challenge In Your Career Thus Far?

Being fully immersed in the creation, presentation, maintenance, build, analytical, objective, subjective, learning, hacking new paths, finding paths, falling off paths…and in the end…just finding time to forget about it all and just play music…

How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it or what’s Your typical songwriting process?

When playing in a band for a long time, songwriting has the benefit of knowing what direction the other instruments might head towards. Ricky writes the chords, lyrics and does the arrangements while Tom and Fritz are free to embellish and pen in their emotional story…in the end the songs play the band…

How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?

The internet has made the world a far more approachable and visual place…making other ideas graspable…sonically though, has been a tougher road since the types of devices music is listened to on has been vastly increased. Quality has been hard to uphold but in the coming years we think that’ll level out. Services are making a serious leap into higher bandwidths and speeds. Hopefully this helps out the music business by allowing smaller artist’s fans to stream directly from their website servers with a reasonable subscription and move away from money greedy services like Spotify which don’t pay forward what they should…
